Eastern Promises mini-review

So now Eastern Promises set in London, with a Canadian director, starring a Frenchman, an Australian, and an American as Russian immigrants (or to be correct from former Soviet nations).  Naomi Watts plays a midwife a second generation immigrant and a complete Londoner.  When a young prostitute dies giving birth Watts takes it upon herself to find family.

I really enjoyed this and it regularly kept me guessing as to what was next always regularly avoiding the obvious plot.  I think I expected actually the film to be much more epic in scope but the pared down approach works to make a few big scenes much more dramatic.

You may have read about the violence but to be honest while there are a few wince inducing scenes and the camera never tends to shy away from gruesome cuts there’s nothing here to top the likes of hostel.

It was an interesting film, though I did wonder if it was setting up a Cronenberg first, a sequel.
