“Mag-Ingat Ka Sa… Kulam” (2008) - Philippine Horror

This time out, it’s the Philippine horror fest “Mag-Ingat Ka Sa…. Kulam” aka “Beware of…. Witchcraft!” It’s another of those creepy Asian ghost stories….. and you all know just how much Neko loves her ghost stories!!

The synopsis for it reads as follows: “Mag-Ingat Ka Sa… Kulam” concerns Mira (Judy Ann Santos), a recent survivor of a car accident that has partly affected her memory, and her grip on reality as well. Mira tries to regain bits and pieces of her life with her husband Paul (Dennis Trillo) and blind daughter Sophie (Sharlene San Pedro). Meanwhile, Dave (TJ Trinidad), Mira’s business associate with whom she has an illicit affair, convinces Mira to leave her husband, as what she has planned to do before the car accident. But what drives Mira to further confusion are the strange things that start to occur in her home. As a malevolent presence threatens to destroy her marriage to Paul and her relationship with Sophie, Mira is forced to confront her past and discover her true history.”

Creepy, eh? Well let’s not just stand around here, let’s “Read On” shall we?

“Monarch of the Moon/ Destination:Mars!!” (2005/2006) - Parody

This time out… a break from the Asian ghosts, monsters, and kung-fu antics that usually populate the trashy cinema I like to watch. With Halloween approaching, I lucked out and discovered this lil’ gem, a double feature parody of old 40’s serial adventure cliffhangers and 50’s alien invasion films, “Monarch of the Moon” and “Destination:Mars!”.

I ran into this one quite by accident, and was lucky enough to find a copy of the two disc collector’s release of this one by BCI/ Image Entertainment.

So…. is it a nostalgia filled look at the films of old I saw on Saturday mornings? Let’s take a look!

“Tali Pocong Perawan” (2008) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

Well… seems I’ve restored functionality to my system before October completely slipped by, and so Neko-chan can now share with you again her love of all things ghostly and asian movie wise….

This time out, it’s the Indonesian fright fest “Tali Pocong Perawan” or “Dead Virgin’s String”. Yep.. another of those Indo ghost stories, this time by way of the Malay release by PMP Entertainment.

The synopsis reads as follows:“Nino is a weird guy with a strange personality. Unlike Nino, his brother Aldo is a more outgoing and popular guy. Unsurprisingly, it is easy for Aldo to be with any girl he likes, notably a pretty girl named Virnie. Nino who behaves awkwardly also has feelings for Virnie. Unbeknownst to Aldo and Virnie, Nino often peeps at them together inside the house in intimate moments. This continues until Nino finally decided to steal Virnie away from his own brother. While surfing through the internet, Nino discovers a legend about strings that are taken from female virgin corpses. This certain string has a power that can attract the heart of any women. The way the string must be obtained is by using hands to dig out the grave of a female virgin and then taking off the cotton string by using the mouth. All these feelings of love that Nino has for Virnie, blinds him into thinking not clearly. He finds a virgin corpse that has recently been buried. After getting this mysterious string, he mixes it into the water that is intended for Virnie to drink. Will Nino succeed in stealing Virnie with the string’s power?”

Hmmmm? A creepy Peeping Tom…. schoolgirl suicides…. evil Internet magic lessons…. and floaty shroud covered ghosts…. Yes indeed, Neko’s soooo gonna watch this one. But is it worth it? You’ll just have to “Read On” and find out, now won’t ya?

“Hansel & Gretel” (2007) Korean Horror/ Fantasy

This one took a while to finally make it’s way to DVD, but the wait is over, and now Neko can give you her review of “Hansel & Gretel”, the latest Korean Horror/ Fantasy to be based on an old European Fairy Tale….

The synopsis I found for it reads as follows: “A reckless young man, Eun-soo drives to his mother’s and has a car accident. When Eun-soo wakes up, he meets a mysterious girl and is led to her fairytale-like house in the middle of the forest. There, Eun-soo is trapped with the girl and her siblings who never age. Soon he learns all the adults who have visited or stayed in the house have met mysterious yet terrible ends. More shockingly, their cruel deaths are drawn in details and made into a fairytale book by the children. Scared Eun-soo tries to find the way out, but the house is secluded in the forest with no way out. And then, Eun-soo discovers a book which tells a brutal end of none other than himself!”

Ooooh! Scary sounding stuff… and the Koreans usually do really good horror movies that your Favorite Catgirl Princess likes, so let’s find out, shall we?

“The Deserted Inn” (2008) - Chinese Ghost/ Horror

Well, Saturday’s Movie Nite at my apartment wasn’t a total loss… I managed to watch the new Chinese ghost movie, “The Deserted Inn”, and now I’m ready to tell you all about it too.

The simple synopsis for it reads: Kenny Kwan stars as a music composer whose career is on the rocks and retreats to a deserted town looking for inspiration to write his next hit song. After checking into a local inn, he begins to experience nightmares that push him to the brink of insanity until he unveils the dark secret of the innkeeper.”

There’s a bit more to it, of course, but to learn that, you guys are just going to have to follow Neko’s lead and “Read On” !!

“Possessed” (2006) - Malaysian/HK Ghost/ Horror

Another day, and another movie for you, dear readers. Today we take a look at the Malay/ HK co-production “Possessed”, the second film by Malay director Bjarne Wong. By most accounts, Bjarne Wong is not a terribly skilled director, and what I read of this didn’t make it sound that good, but….. the most unusual element of it was the staring roll by Korean transsexual pop star and model Harisu. I must confess that it was more a curiosity about Harisu whom I had heard of but never seen that got me interested in seeing this than anything else I had read. When the Singapore disc popped up, I just had to give it a try.

The synopsis for it reads: “China-born sisters Amber (Chia) and Lisu (Harisu) come to Malaysia seeking greater opportunities in their modeling and singing careers, respectively. But things go wrong when Amber falls into a coma and Lisu goes missing.

Amber is sent back to China for treatment. When she wakes up five months later, she has no recollection of her past, not even boyfriend Dino (Alan Yun). Dino decides to bring Amber back to Malaysia, hoping it will help jog her memory.

Back in Malaysia, Amber starts having nightmares. When she stumbles upon a photograph and video of Lisu and her, she decides to search for her missing sister. During her search, she meets William (Steve Yap), who claims to be Lisu’s ex-flame. Soon strange things begin to happen. Amber begins having visions of Lisu’s spirit and her nightmares become more frequent and violent.”

So….. is it a good lil’ long haired ghost movie? Or did it really need the notoriety of Harisu to sell it? Let’s find out, shall we……

“The Ghost and Master Boh” (2008) - Thai Ghost/ Comedy

It’s time for another of those crazy Thai films that this lil’ Catgirl can’t seem to leave alone… so let’s review the slapstick weirdness that is “The Ghost and Master Boh” aka “Phee Taa Waan Kab Ajarn Taa Boh” or “ผีตาหวานอาจารย์ตาโบ๋” if you can read Thai….. Hehehehe!!

The synopsis for it reads: “Ajarn Boh (Jaturong Mokjok) is a fake medium who manages to fool the locals with his tricks but is in big trouble with the powerful Au. Meanwhile, Waan (Padchon Kompreawpan) is in love with Wit (Weerayuth Naburana), but Wit doesn’t know Waan is a ghost. Waan was murdered by Au and has returned to seek revenge. Ajarn Boh meets Waan, the first time he has actually seen a real ghost, and teams up with her against Au.”

Hmmmm? Ghosts… fake mediums….. goofy Thai character actors….. potty jokes galore…. sounds like all the prerequisites are there for Thailand’s answer to “Abbot & Costello Meet the Krasue”….

Will it entertain me? Make me giggle uncontrollably till I nearly pee myself? More importantly…. is it worth you all finding your own copy of this? Let’s find out! “Read On”, if you dare!!

“Kesurupan” (2008) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

poster-kesurupanAnother of the multitude of crazy Indonesian discs that have flooded into my Mailbox lately, “Kesurupan” aka “Possessed” is one of the glut of horror films coming out of the Indonesian film industry these days. I’d meant to do the review for this one earlier, but lately your favorite Catgirl has been one busy… busy… busy kitten. Still… whenever there is still any energy left in my poor lil’ body after a hard day at work, the best medicine is always a relaxing evening with a couple of trashy asian movies… (and occasionally even a good one!)

Is “Kesurupan” such a movie? Or will Neko be dissapointed and cranky at work again after losing valuable nap time? Only the Spirits of Bad Movies know for sure….

…..And of course you as well, o’ Regular Readers. (assuming you continue to “Read On” that is…Hehehehe!!)

“Zombie Strippers” (2008) - Horror Sexploitation

I’ve had this one simmering in the pile of new DVD’s for a while and a few evenings ago it finally found it’s way to the top. Well… all you regular readers know my love for baaaaad, baaaad cinema goodies, so how could I not give the Region 2 German release of “Zombie Strippers” a try? But, ….you say,… Neko-chan…. there are no long haired ghosts in this one!!”

OK, OK….. I know… There are definitely times that people say to me… “Ummmm? Miyuki, how come you only ever watch all those trashy subtitled asian horror films?” So… for those people I’d like to use this review to prove that this lil’ Catgirl will also watch trashy english language movies too. Hehehehe!! So…. without further adieu, lets explore the absolute “craptaculousity” that is “Zombie Strippers”!!

(Pssst!! That’s your subtle hint to “Read On”….)
