“Tali Pocong Perawan” (2008) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

Well… seems I’ve restored functionality to my system before October completely slipped by, and so Neko-chan can now share with you again her love of all things ghostly and asian movie wise….

This time out, it’s the Indonesian fright fest “Tali Pocong Perawan” or “Dead Virgin’s String”. Yep.. another of those Indo ghost stories, this time by way of the Malay release by PMP Entertainment.

The synopsis reads as follows:“Nino is a weird guy with a strange personality. Unlike Nino, his brother Aldo is a more outgoing and popular guy. Unsurprisingly, it is easy for Aldo to be with any girl he likes, notably a pretty girl named Virnie. Nino who behaves awkwardly also has feelings for Virnie. Unbeknownst to Aldo and Virnie, Nino often peeps at them together inside the house in intimate moments. This continues until Nino finally decided to steal Virnie away from his own brother. While surfing through the internet, Nino discovers a legend about strings that are taken from female virgin corpses. This certain string has a power that can attract the heart of any women. The way the string must be obtained is by using hands to dig out the grave of a female virgin and then taking off the cotton string by using the mouth. All these feelings of love that Nino has for Virnie, blinds him into thinking not clearly. He finds a virgin corpse that has recently been buried. After getting this mysterious string, he mixes it into the water that is intended for Virnie to drink. Will Nino succeed in stealing Virnie with the string’s power?”

Hmmmm? A creepy Peeping Tom…. schoolgirl suicides…. evil Internet magic lessons…. and floaty shroud covered ghosts…. Yes indeed, Neko’s soooo gonna watch this one. But is it worth it? You’ll just have to “Read On” and find out, now won’t ya?

“Kesurupan” (2008) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

poster-kesurupanAnother of the multitude of crazy Indonesian discs that have flooded into my Mailbox lately, “Kesurupan” aka “Possessed” is one of the glut of horror films coming out of the Indonesian film industry these days. I’d meant to do the review for this one earlier, but lately your favorite Catgirl has been one busy… busy… busy kitten. Still… whenever there is still any energy left in my poor lil’ body after a hard day at work, the best medicine is always a relaxing evening with a couple of trashy asian movies… (and occasionally even a good one!)

Is “Kesurupan” such a movie? Or will Neko be dissapointed and cranky at work again after losing valuable nap time? Only the Spirits of Bad Movies know for sure….

…..And of course you as well, o’ Regular Readers. (assuming you continue to “Read On” that is…Hehehehe!!)

“Kuntilanak 3″ (2008) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

Kuntilanak 3 PosterWell, I finally managed to grab a copy of “Kuntilanak 3″ so I could wrap up this series. It came to DVD much quicker than I expected, and I lucked out snagging the Indonesian disc for it as well. This one is supposed to be the finale to the story, but one never knows….

After the major disappointment of the second film, this lil’ Catgirl has been fretting that this one would end up being just a big letdown, never explaining anything, leaving all sorts of loose plot elements to dangle in the breeze like forgotten laundry on a clothesline. But….. I really, really, really liked the first one, so I just had to give it a chance.

Will it save the Trilogy? Does Samantha finally lose “The Chant”? Will any of this make any sense by the end? Well…… don’t just sit there, “Read On”!!

“Kuntilanak 2″ (2007) - Indonesian Ghost/Horror

kuntilanak2_posterIt’s baaaack!!! I know your favorite Catgirl promised this review a while ago, but right after I ordered the Malay disc, I managed to finally find a copy of the original Indonesian release. Since I figured it would be a better disc, I naturally had to grab it as well. Especially since even ordering both set me back about the combined cost of a cup of coffee….. (Ah…. gotta love those amazing Asian DVD prices….)

Anyway, this gives me the chance to watch and compare them, and give you the whole lowdown on what I was hoping would be as cool and offbeat a film as the original. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this one for months and impatiently scouring the net for it in a subtitled form.

The English-challenged synopsis for it reads: “Kuntilanak 2 is the sequel of the first movie starring Julie Estelle. The story continues. Samantha (Julie Estelle) is more and more involve in her dark side. Meanwhile Mangkoedjiwo sect wants to get her to become their sect leader. Sam is struggling try to escape from the dark side. Together with Agung she fights back to Mangkoedjiwo sect.”

Are we in for a treat? Will Sam surrender to the intoxicating power of “The Chant”? Or is this one going to be a major league letdown for your Favorite Catgirl Princess? Let’s “Read On” and find out!!

“Lewat Tengah Malam” (2007) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

Lewat Tengah Malam PosterWell, my shower last Sunday evening helped immensely, and as a result I was able to keep my self awake long enough to watch a couple of movies. First up for review is another of the Indonesian horror movies I got in from Malaysia last week…. “Lewat Tengah Malam” aka “After Midnight”.

The synopsis for it reads: “A widower named Tara lives with her only teenage daughter, Alice. Tara’s ex-husband, Yuga is in the mental hospital. Strange things happen when Alice sees a spirit haunted her in the apartment. The same spirit also terrorizes Yuga at the mental hospital. The spirit is appeared to be Yuga’s long time mistress who supposedly died in a horrible accident. Relations between mother and daughter become strained over the weird supernatural events that seem to be focused upon Alice. Will Alice’s best friend Ramon help her unravel the mystery before it is too late?”

Is it a good scary film like Mistress Neko likes? Or does it fail miserably? Guess you’ll just have to read some more to find out! Hehehehe!!

“Legenda Sundel Bolong” (2007) - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror

Legenda Sundel Bolong PosterYet another pile of movies from Indonesia arrived recently and this time out it’s the creepy lil’ film, “Legenda Sundel Bolong”. The cover for this one sold Neko-chan on watchin’ it first…… Hehehehe!!

Ooooh!! Soooo scary!!

So anyway, the synopsis reads as follows: “In a small village in Central Java, many unexplainable things have been happening. Villagers have disappeared suddenly, and then found dead. Imah (Jian Batari), a traditional dancer falls in love with Sarpa (Baim). After marriage, they decided to move to another village to start a new life and away from the terror. Imah stopped her dancing career and Sarpa gets a job working for Danapati (Tio Pakusadewo), as a plantation worker. Their move to the new village has upset the locals since they consider Imah a cheap dancer who has no morals. Danapati goes after Imah and does everything to have her, including sends Sarpa to another town for some work. Danapati forcefully rapes her repeatedly. When Sarpa comes back home, Imah tries to cover up everything that has happened to her. Imah’s new village goes through the same happenings as her old village and even worst. A lot of people are found dead with a hole in their back. The locals start getting tensed and blame each other for the killings. While trying to find the killer, the ghost “Sundel Bolong” (the ghost with the hole on her tummy) appears and creates terror in the village. Will Sarpa ever find out what happened to Imah? What is the connection with the ghost and the killings? What actually happens with the legend of Sundel Bolong?”

Pretty straightforward…. so how does it play out? Lets “Read On” and see…

“Pulau Hantu” - Indonesian Ghost/ Horror (2007)

Another crazy Indonesian Ghost story….set on what I’m told is an actual haunted island somewheres in the East Indies……“Pulau Hantu” is the latest on Neko’s list of DVD acquisitions from Malaysia. Is it a creepy lil’ scarefest or the worst piece of crap to ever sneak outta Indonesia? Lets find out!!

Pulau Poster

So our story begins pretty much the way one might expect……eight over-indulged, well-to-do 20 somethings are out for a trip on one of the boy’s daddy’s powerboat when a frantic phone call threatens to cut their little trip short….but fear not! While roaring about the high seas without a clue, they manage to end up close to an island resort where they can get dropped off and picked up later by the boat pilot. Sure they don’t know where they are…sure, they don’t have reservations……but they have daddy’s Plastic, and that’s all that matters. Serves daddy right for being such a stick in the mud anyway. Too bad this is the infamous “Pulau Hantu”, the “Ghost Island”……

PosterYep……Neko’s got herself some more Indonesian DVD’s!! This time out it’s “Lawang Sewu: Dendam Kuntilanak” by director Arie Azis, who also did “Suster Ngesot” which I reviewed a while ago.

The Synopsis for this one reads: ” A group of teenagers decide to go to the town of Semarang to spend their school holidays. Little do they expect that when they arrive at the ruins of Lawang Sewu, that they will encounter a series of frightening events that will unravel each of their well-kept secrets.”

Does it measure up? Let’s see, shall we?
