“The Ghost and Master Boh” (2008) - Thai Ghost/ Comedy

It’s time for another of those crazy Thai films that this lil’ Catgirl can’t seem to leave alone… so let’s review the slapstick weirdness that is “The Ghost and Master Boh” aka “Phee Taa Waan Kab Ajarn Taa Boh” or “ผีตาหวานอาจารย์ตาโบ๋” if you can read Thai….. Hehehehe!!

The synopsis for it reads: “Ajarn Boh (Jaturong Mokjok) is a fake medium who manages to fool the locals with his tricks but is in big trouble with the powerful Au. Meanwhile, Waan (Padchon Kompreawpan) is in love with Wit (Weerayuth Naburana), but Wit doesn’t know Waan is a ghost. Waan was murdered by Au and has returned to seek revenge. Ajarn Boh meets Waan, the first time he has actually seen a real ghost, and teams up with her against Au.”

Hmmmm? Ghosts… fake mediums….. goofy Thai character actors….. potty jokes galore…. sounds like all the prerequisites are there for Thailand’s answer to “Abbot & Costello Meet the Krasue”….

Will it entertain me? Make me giggle uncontrollably till I nearly pee myself? More importantly…. is it worth you all finding your own copy of this? Let’s find out! “Read On”, if you dare!!

The appearance of Buud brings back memories of the past, and now Ming must face a truth that is even more terrible. “Soul’s Code” aka “Tod Rahad Vinyarn” (2007) - Thai Ghost/ Suspense

Soul\'s Code PosterFirst up for review today is the recently released Thai Police Suspense/ Thriller, “Soul’s Code”….. Neko scored herself a bit of luck when this one was released in Thailand complete with the ever so important feature of English subtitling. With a promise of gritty forensic action ala “CSI” and the added goodness of creepy ghost story elements thrown in, how could I go wrong? Yep… and it gave me the perfect excuse to pick up some Thai pop CD’s I’d been eyeing too…. Yay!!

The quick Thai synopsis for it reads: “When a murdered body of a high school girl is found naked with a strange mark on her forehead, which is to prevent the vengeance of her spirit, Detective Khan from DSI (Department of Special Investigations) is assigned to investigate the case. The dead girl is brought to Dr. Nicha at CIFS in Bangkok to find more clues and identify the body. Meanwhile, C, a former teenager’s heartthrob is involved in this case when he begins to search for his lost ex-girlfriend. When the ghost is trying to connect to the living, Detective Khan starts to believe in something supernatural that leads him to the truth.”

Do vengeful ghosts and modern cops make for a good story mix? Well let’s all “Read On” and find out, shall we?

“Body #19″ - Thai horror

Body 19 PosterAnother one of those Thai films I regularly snag out of Singapore, “Body #19″, looks to be the latest in the medical themed ghost stories to come out of Asia this year, following on the trail of “Cadaver” and “Sick Nurses” from Thailand and “Autopsy Room” aka “Cadaver” out of Korea.

We all know how asian audiences fear the dead…. especially the squeamish nature of handling the dead and the spiritual dangers inherent in such activities. All these films exploit that cultural fear and play upon such beliefs to create suspense.

So how does this one stack up? Let’s find out shall we?

“Ghost Mother” (2007) - Thai Ghost/ Horror

Ghost Mother PosterIt’s time for another review, and this time out your Catgirl Princess has the spooky Thai chiller “Ghost Mother” aka “Pee Liang Luke” for you direct from Singapore, the latest of a number of Thai films released there with english subtitles….Yay!!

The synopsis for this one reads as follows:“Mother had left her 3 children and their father, remarried and went to live abroad. When the father suddenly dies of unknown cause, Nuntha had to care for her 3 niece and nephews that her brother had left behind. To earn money to support the children Nuntha sells soya milk and fried doughnuts in the morning.

It is an old family recipe handed down to her from her mother. She works hard and with love for her nieces and nephews. When Nuntha finds out that Chai, her dead brother had worked as undercover agent to gather evidence on powerful criminals due to an unfortunate misunderstanding she was murdered as well. Nuntha (Patcharapa Chaichua), even in her death still worries about her 3 nieces and nephews and how will they survive on their own so she continues to care for them as a ghost.

When Police Colonel Sumet (Thana Suttikamon), Chai’s superior officer finds out that one of his agents had peculiarly died, he started the investigation. He was astonished to find out that the one raising these children is actually a ghost of their aunt Nuntha.” Got it? OK, sounds pretty simple, eh?

Yes…this one is pretty much another “Long Haired Ghost” story….but remember, Neko-chan LIKES “Long Haired Ghost” stories. A whole lot…… Probably more than any other girl you know….. This one doesn’t break any new ground in this genre, but at the same time, it doesn’t screw it up either…..

The question would be then: “Is it really worth your time to seek it out?” I had to order it direct from Singapore, as Thai films with subtitles are getting to be few and far between on this side of the Pacific. Is it good enough for you to do the same? I guess you’ll have to read on to find out…..

“The Legend of Sudsakorn” - Thai Folklore/Fantasy (2006)

Sudsakorn PosterThe soft music of flutes fill the incense scented air and that can only mean one thing…..your favorite Catgirl Princess is back with another review of an asian flavored goody from the mysterious DVD land of Thailand……..

This time out it’s “The Legend of Sudsakorn” which showed up in my mailbox and which I’ve finally been able to watch after a particularly difficult bit of self subtitling on my part….

Were my days of irritated hair pulling and unladylike swearing worth it? I guess it’s time to find out…….

As with most recent Thai offerings, this Region 3 PAL formatted disc from Thailand comes without English subtitles…..(I know….I know….you’re getting pretty tired of hearing me bitch about it…..but it’s reallly, really annoying!!!!) This one though, was one of those that for some inexplicable reason has just refused to pop up anywhere else………and trust me, this Catgirl has been looking.

Lets start with the synopsis…… “Sudsakorn is a curious young man, raised in the ancient traditions of magic by his mystical grandfather. He never knew his father, only a void where the loving memories should be. His mother, a beautiful mermaid is pained by his sadness, so sends him on a quest to find his father. Armed with his grandfather’s magical weaponry Sudsakorn sets off into the mysterious world of yore on his trusty steed, Ma Nin Mangkorn, a half dragon, half horse. What starts as a simple quest soon turns into an amazing adventure, and a fight for survival against the dark forces of the ancient world.

Old Siam is a terrifying and dangerous place, especially for wizards and warlocks. Danger soon crosses Sudsakorn’s path to finding his father. Sudsakorn encounters a heinous and deadly creature, and must use his magical powers to defeat the foul beast, and continue his journey. The display of power doesn’t go unnoticed and Sudsakorn is persuaded to fight monsters and demons by the king of an ancient city.

With his new found mission to protect the innocent, and slay all evil that plagues the land, his quest to find his father is put on hold. But can Sudsakorn’s power last, or will the forces of evil defeat him before he finds his father? Sudsakorn must fight to stay alive, before he too falls victim the treachery of the ancient world… “

Sounds good right?…..Well then of course you are gonna want to read on !!! (more…)

“Scared” (2006) aka “รับน้องสยองขวัญ” - Thai Slasher/ Horror

Well, another pile of stuff has arrived in my mailbox, among these a whole new bunch of Thai horror films, including 2006’s “Scared”….Will director Pakpoom Wongjinda follow through on it’s title? Let’s find out…..

First the bad news. The Thai DVD has no English subtitles. There are extras, a trailer and a brief behind-the-scenes segment but that’s all. The image is 16:9 anamorphic, the audio is a clear 5.1 dolby mix, and, as always, official Thai DVDs are very reasonably priced. The film has also made it to DVD in Germany and Malaysia as well, but again with no English subtitles. Thank goodness your lil’ Catgirl had some subs I could work with and do a bit o’ translation on and a desire to take a stab at it.

Was all that worth my limited time and effort? Or is this goofy Catgirl just certifiably crazy? There’s really only one sure way to find out…. You’ll just have to “Read On”… silly.

“Cadaver” - Thai Horror (2006)

We’re back to Thailand today for a peek at “Cadaver”, Thailand’s look at they creepyness to be had in the whole world of medical student research….. The original Thai title for the film was “Ajaan Yai”, which is the Thai term for used for cadavers donated for medical school training. It means “the principal” and is meant to be a term of respect for those who donate their bodies for research, but this was seen as too controversial and offensive so it was later changed to “Sope”, which means simply “corpse”. Either way…. it’s a horror movie…. trust this lil’ Catgirl.

Our synopsis for it is:” Mai is a medical student who encounters a scary experience during an experimental cadaver during her anatomy subject. After that, she’s haunted by a woman ghost that keeps following her everywhere. While Mai is frightened of the fearsome ghost, her teacher Prakit is the only hope who can help her. However, when she deeply discovers the truth behind this unknown cadaver, once she realises that it is somehow linked to her own past and a crime that she had committed and then tried to hide, it leads her to find a horrible story of a girl called Dawan who is linked to the cadaver.”

Creepy, huh? Well then, let’s “Read On” shall we?

“Alone” aka “แฝด” - Thai Horror (2007)

Today we take a look at the new Thai horror film “Alone” from the directors of “Shutter”, Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom. Originally released in Thailand as one of the flock of unsubbed films that have begun to crop up thanks to the currently xenophobic efforts of the Thai Ministry of Culture’s push to bolster Thai culture by apparently making their movies unavailable to non speakers of Thai…… but thankfully now available on region 3 PAL english subbed form from Singapore.

Wanna know more? Then you just gotta “Read On”!!
